Intergenerational
connections: Exploring Opportunities for Northern and Rural
Community Sustainability through Education, Health, and Community
Development Policy
Enhancing northern and rural community collaboration and social
infrastructure requires a renewed emphasis on understanding the
interconnected sectors and groups within these dynamic contexts.
Current challenges in northern and rural communities, such as the
impact of youth migration and mobility on the social and economic
base, may be countered with an increased awareness of the assets
that youth and the senior generation contribute to northern
communities in transition. An understanding of how youth, education,
health, and labour are interconnected at the community level is
critical for long-term sustainable planning for the future of
northern communities.
Community-based knowledge, experience and insight are integral to
effective policy and programs in rural and northern Canada. By
applying an intergenerational perspective, with concrete examples
such as apprenticeships, labour, and intergenerational cooperatives,
Ms. Hamm will propose a community development framework that builds
social networks and community resiliency. Connecting youth and
adult community leaders or mentors offers a unique opportunity to
assess the impact of the social, political, and economic realities
of building healthy, sustainable northern communities.
In this
presentation, delegates will explore the social and economic
benefits of education and planning that is attentive to society and
culture while it is responsive to the diverse needs of northern
communities. Delegates attending this session will receive a
toolkit and resources to share in their own communities as they
prepare for opportunities and challenges.
