Joanne McGill BSW, RSW
Joanne McGill
is the
Alberta Urban Municipalities Association’s Provincial Coordinator of
the Municipal Sustainability Planning Initiative. This position is
responsible for the effective operation of the AUMA’s Municipal
Sustainability Planning (MSP) Initiative, Phase 4, by providing
provincial support, direction and knowledge-sharing for Alberta
municipalities that are developing Municipal Sustainability Plans.
Ms. McGill serves as a volunteer organizational
leader with the Greater Edmonton Alliance. She is a registered
member of the Alberta College of Social Workers since 1990.
Before joining AUMA in 2008, Ms. McGill was the
Executive Director of the St. Albert Help Society, a not for profit,
Community Home Care and Support Services agency. Her educational
background includes a BSW from Ryerson University in Toronto and
over 27 years of experience in social work and community
development/organizing.
Municipal Sustainability Planning can seem complex, daunting, or out
of reach for small or rural municipalities but it is also an
incredible opportunity to engage in meaningful community dialogue
and to lay the foundation for a unique and vibrant future.
Sustainability is not only about our relationship with our built and
natural environment but also about our economic viability and the
health and vitality of the critically important socio-economic
multi-generational networks that exist within our communities and
regions. The families that make up our rural and remote areas know
how innovation and hard work can shape their future and it is their
historically demonstrated ability to find solutions that will
ultimately sustain our small towns and remote communities.
Join
Joanne McGill, AUMA’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative Provincial
Coordinator and Tania Sprong, AUMA Community Coordinator, as they
demystify the sustainability planning process. Joanne will provide
an overview of AUMA MSP Toolkit, best practices and examples from
other municipalities while Tania will talk about sustainability
planning from a small town perspective. Between them, they will
invite you to rethink your approach to sustainability and to learn
how to build the internal capacity necessary to achieve a Municipal
Sustainability Plan that represents the unique qualities of each
community. |
