R.J. 'Rick' Samotej

Rick Samotej is currently Superintendent (Sup.) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and assigned to the post of District Commander, Eastern Alberta District, "K" Division.

Born in Chatham, Ont. Supt. Samotej completed high school in Ontario and attended St. Clair College in Windsor, Ont. He was engaged into the RCMP before completing a management program. He continued his education through Simon Fraser University, the University of Alberta, School of Business and the Canadian Police College in management training programs.

Sup. Samotej joined the Mounties in 1974, completed recruit training in Regina and Saskatchewan and was then posted to British Columbia for the first 7 years of his career. He has served the citizens of British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Alberta throughout his career. Supt. Samotej has served the northern Alberta communities of Bonnyville and Fort McMurray. In June of 1998, Sup. Samotej was commissioned to the rank of Inspector, where he served as the Officer In-Charge of Leduc, Edmonton International Airport, Beaumont and Thorsby Detachments. In 2001 Supt. Samotej was selected to participate in the Alberta Policing Study to reorganize the management structure of the RCMP in Alberta. He is also participating in the traffic service reorganization for Alberta.

With the promotion to the rank of Superintendent in August of 2003, Supt Samotej transferred to St. Albert, to the position of District Commander where he continues to serve. His other responsibilities include Emergency Response Team Commander, Adjudicator for dispute resolution for promotions and discharge and demotion boards, and from time to time, a Security Officer for V.I.P. security.
